Prepare the strength machine
- Adjust the seat, back pad, and movement arm so the machine pivot aligns with the joint being trained.
- Insert the weight pin fully and test the start/stop mechanism with a light load.
Standing Cable Tricep Overhead Extension trains the triceps by straightening the elbow while the shoulder and upper arm remain deliberately positioned.
Primary musclesTriceps brachii
Secondary musclesAnconeus, Posterior deltoids
Follow the sequence in order, paying attention to the starting position, movement path, and finish described in each step.
Set the shoulders and upper arms for Standing Cable Tricep Overhead Extension, then bend the elbows until the attachment or weight is under control.
Brace the trunk and keep the wrists straight before extending the elbows.
Straighten the elbows against resistance while keeping the upper arms from drifting.
Finish with the triceps contracted without snapping or forcefully locking the joint.
Return slowly until the elbows are comfortably bent. Repeat without changing the established position.
These are the form changes most likely to move work away from the target muscles or make the repetition harder to control.
Keep the upper arms in the selected position so the elbow joint performs the extension.
Brace and reduce the load if the torso rocks or the shoulders roll to finish the repetition.
Keep the wrists aligned with the forearms throughout the press, kickback, or overhead extension.
Finish smoothly with the triceps contracted rather than forcefully jamming the elbow straight.
Programming guide
Use Standing Cable Tricep Overhead Extension as accessory work after larger compound exercises, or earlier only when its target action is the session's priority.
Use Standing Cable Tricep Overhead Extension after larger compound movements, or earlier only when its target action is the workout's main priority.
Use one to three times per week and count the work alongside compound exercises that train the same muscles.
| Goal | Sets | Reps or time | Rest | Effort and execution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strength accessory | 2–4 | 6–10 | 75–150 sec | Leave 2–3 controlled reps in reserve |
| Muscle growth | 2–4 | 8–15 | 60–120 sec | Usually 1–3 clean reps in reserve |
| Local endurance | 2–3 | 12–20 | 45–90 sec | Stop before range or joint position changes |
Add controlled repetitions within the selected range before increasing resistance. For unilateral work, progress each side according to the weaker technically sound performance.
Scale the movement
A high cable and fixed standing position make upper-arm control easy to practise.
Use an elevated surface to scale body weight while keeping the elbows close.
Return the elbow to its bent position over three seconds without moving the upper arm.
Train each side independently after bilateral elbow control is consistent.
