How to perform Barbell Behind Back Wrist Curls

Follow the sequence in order, paying attention to the starting position, movement path, and finish described in each step.

  1. Stand tall and hold a light bar behind the thighs with the palms facing backward and the hands about shoulder width apart.

  2. Keep the upper arms close to the body and let the bar roll carefully toward the fingers without opening the hands completely.

  3. Close the fingers around the bar, then curl the wrists upward behind the body while the elbows and shoulders stay still.

  4. Pause at the top of the small wrist range without shrugging or bending the elbows.

  5. Lower the wrists and let the bar return toward the fingers under control before the next repetition.

Common Barbell Behind Back Wrist Curls mistakes

Forearms lifting

Keep the forearms supported so the movement stays at the wrist.

Using too much weight

Choose a light load that allows the full small wrist range without jerking.

Forcing joint range

Stop at a controlled muscular stretch and contraction rather than bending the wrist aggressively.

Rushing repetitions

Use a slow return and keep every repetition separate.

When to modify or choose another exercise

  • Forearms lifting: Keep the forearms supported so the movement stays at the wrist.
  • Forcing joint range: Stop at a controlled muscular stretch and contraction rather than bending the wrist aggressively.
  • Stop when the exercise produces sharp, catching, radiating, or increasing joint pain rather than the expected muscular effort.
  • Alternative Supported Barbell Behind Back Wrist Curls: Hold a stable support or use an easier setup while learning the movement.
