How to perform Barbell Wrist Curls

Follow the sequence in order, paying attention to the starting position, movement path, and finish described in each step.

  1. Sit and support both forearms on the thighs or a bench with the palms facing up and wrists just beyond the edge.

  2. Hold the bar with a light shoulder-width grip and keep the forearms pressed into the support.

  3. Let the wrists extend through a comfortable range and allow the bar to roll slightly toward the fingers if grip remains secure.

  4. Close the fingers and curl the palms toward the forearms without lifting the elbows.

  5. Pause, then lower the bar slowly through the same wrist range.

Common Barbell Wrist Curls mistakes

Forearms lifting

Keep the forearms supported so the movement stays at the wrist.

Using too much weight

Choose a light load that allows the full small wrist range without jerking.

Forcing joint range

Stop at a controlled muscular stretch and contraction rather than bending the wrist aggressively.

Rushing repetitions

Use a slow return and keep every repetition separate.

When to modify or choose another exercise

  • Forearms lifting: Keep the forearms supported so the movement stays at the wrist.
  • Forcing joint range: Stop at a controlled muscular stretch and contraction rather than bending the wrist aggressively.
  • Stop when the exercise produces sharp, catching, radiating, or increasing joint pain rather than the expected muscular effort.
  • Alternative Supported Barbell Wrist Curls: Hold a stable support or use an easier setup while learning the movement.

How to use Barbell Wrist Curls in a training program

01

Where it fits in a session

Place Barbell Wrist Curls near the end of the session so forearm fatigue does not limit heavy pulling or loaded carries.

02

How often to use it

Use one to three times per week and reduce direct work when gripping volume is already high.

Starting rep ranges by goal

GoalSetsReps or timeRestEffort and execution
Strength accessory2–46–1075–150 secLeave 2–3 controlled reps in reserve
Muscle growth2–410–2060–120 secUsually 1–3 clean reps in reserve

Pairing and sequencing

  • Use Barbell Wrist Curls after Deadlifts or Barbell Bent Over Rows so grip fatigue does not limit those compound lifts.
  • Pair it with Seated Calf Raises when building a short accessory block.

Regressions and progressions for Barbell Wrist Curls

Start with an easier option

Supported Barbell Wrist Curls

Hold a stable support or use an easier setup while learning the movement.

Reduced-range Barbell Wrist Curls

Use a shorter pain-free range and expand it only as control improves.

Progress when form is repeatable

Tempo Barbell Wrist Curls

Slow the lowering phase without changing the start, finish, or joint alignment.

Paused Barbell Wrist Curls

Add a brief pause at the hardest controlled position before increasing load.
