Prepare the strength machine
- Adjust the seat, back pad, and movement arm so the machine pivot aligns with the joint being trained.
- Insert the weight pin fully and test the start/stop mechanism with a light load.
A machine-based lower-body press that trains the quads and glutes with a supported torso and guided path.
Primary musclesQuadriceps, Gluteus maximus
Secondary musclesHamstrings, Hip adductors, Calves
Follow the sequence in order, paying attention to the starting position, movement path, and finish described in each step.
For Leg Press, place the feet around shoulder width on the platform with the heels fully supported.
Release the safety only after the hips, pelvis, and back are fully supported against the pads.
Bend the knees and hips together while each knee tracks in line with its toes.
Stop before the pelvis rolls away from the pad or the heels lift from the platform.
Press through the whole foot to extend the legs without forcefully locking the knees.
These are the form changes most likely to move work away from the target muscles or make the repetition harder to control.
Limit the depth so the hips, pelvis, and lower back remain supported.
Track both knees in the same direction as the toes throughout the press.
Keep the full foot planted and adjust foot position or depth if the heels lose contact.
Finish with controlled leg extension instead of snapping the joints into the stop.
Programming guide
Use Leg Press early in a session focused on upper legs, or early in a full-body session, when it is a priority lift; place it later when it supports volume for another main movement.
Use Leg Press early in a workout focused on upper legs, or early in a full-body workout, when strength or technical progress is the priority; place it later when it supplies secondary volume.
Use one to three times per week as part of training the relevant muscle groups at least twice weekly; the same exercise does not need to appear in every session.
| Goal | Sets | Reps or time | Rest | Effort and execution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technique | 2–4 | 3–6 | 90–180 sec | Light to moderate; 3–5 reps in reserve |
| Strength | 2–4 | 3–6 | 2–4 min | Heavy, usually 2–3 clean reps in reserve |
| Muscle growth | 2–4 | 6–12 | 90–180 sec | Usually 1–3 clean reps in reserve |
Use double progression: reach the top of the repetition range across all sets with the same technique, then add the smallest practical load and return to the lower end.
Scale the movement
Practise knee tracking and whole-foot pressure without a loaded machine.
Use a shallower depth that keeps the pelvis and back fully supported.
Lower the platform over three seconds while the pelvis remains against the pad.
Use one leg only after bilateral alignment is consistent and with a substantial load reduction.
