Prepare the training area
- Use a level, non-slip surface and clear enough room for the complete movement.
- Place any required mat, bench, or stable hand support before taking the starting position.
Alternate Heel Touches trains controlled trunk rotation or lateral flexion without using momentum.

Follow the sequence in order, paying attention to the starting position, movement path, and finish described in each step.
Take a stable seated or lying position for Alternate Heel Touches and stack the rib cage over the pelvis.
Brace before moving so the rotation or side bend comes from the intended trunk range rather than the knees or lower back.
Rotate or bend through a smooth range while the hips and knees remain aligned with the setup.
Reach the finish without bouncing, pulling with the neck, or letting the resistance drag you farther.
Reverse the same path under control. Complete the planned repetitions evenly on both sides.
These are the form changes most likely to move work away from the target muscles or make the repetition harder to control.
Keep the knees aligned or allow the feet to pivot when the exercise requires whole-body rotation.
Move through a smooth trunk range rather than throwing the arms or load from side to side.
Stop before the resistance drags the ribs away from a stable pelvis.
Maintain the selected seated, standing, or lying position throughout both directions.
Programming guide
Use Alternate Heel Touches in a focused core block after the main lifts, or pair it with an exercise that does not depend heavily on trunk freshness.
Place Alternate Heel Touches after the main compound lifts, in a focused core block, or beside an exercise that does not require a fresh trunk.
Use two to four times per week while accounting for trunk work already supplied by squats, hinges, carries, and overhead lifting.
| Goal | Sets | Reps or time | Rest | Effort and execution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Control / technique | 2–3 | 5–8 reps per side | 45–75 sec | Stop well before position changes |
| Strength / endurance | 2–4 | 8–15 reps per side | 60–90 sec | Finish with 1–3 technically clean reps in reserve |
Increase the controlled range, lever length, or hold duration before adding load. End every set when rib, pelvis, or lower-back position changes.
Scale the movement
Train the trunk to resist rotation before producing a larger rotational range.
Use a stable seat or stance and a small range to learn control.
Pause at the end of the controlled range without letting the resistance pull farther.
Reduce lower-body contribution and increase trunk control with a kneeling base.
