How to perform Dumbbell Toe Touch Crunch

Follow the sequence in order, paying attention to the starting position, movement path, and finish described in each step.

  1. Lie on the back with both legs extended vertically and hold one dumbbell securely above the chest with straight arms.

  2. Press the lower back gently into the floor and keep the legs still over the hips.

  3. Exhale, curl the shoulder blades from the floor, and reach the dumbbell toward the toes without swinging the arms.

  4. Pause at the highest controlled reach while the pelvis and legs remain still.

  5. Lower the shoulders and dumbbell under control until the upper back returns to the floor.

Common Dumbbell Toe Touch Crunch mistakes

Pulling on the neck

Support the head lightly or cross the arms; the abdominals should move the rib cage.

Using arm momentum

Keep the held load aligned with the chest and shoulders instead of swinging it to start the repetition.

Moving through the hips only

Begin by bringing the ribs toward the pelvis rather than simply sitting upright with the hip flexors.

Dropping the return

Lower the spine or torso gradually and keep tension through the longest position.

When to modify or choose another exercise

  • Pulling on the neck: Support the head lightly or cross the arms; the abdominals should move the rib cage.
  • Moving through the hips only: Begin by bringing the ribs toward the pelvis rather than simply sitting upright with the hip flexors.
  • Stop when the exercise produces sharp, catching, radiating, or increasing joint pain rather than the expected muscular effort.
  • Alternative Short-range abdominal crunch: Lift only the head and shoulder blades while the pelvis and feet remain supported.
